25 July 2007 Turn to Google Maps for flood updates "It was only a couple of weeks ago that property site OnOneMap, which uses Google Maps as its engine, got into a battle over the flood data it was offering browsers. Because the mapping data showing flood risk is owned by the Environment Agency, they were forced to remove it, an argument we covered in a recent Free our Data piece."

Information World Review blog 5 July 2007 Flood risk information could be revealed by Environment Agency, reveals Guardian "Daily newspaper The Guardian is still pursuing its worthy campaign Free our Data, which highlights how much information the government creates and then either never makes available to information professionals and consumers or does so at restrictively high prices. Today's issue of the newspaper rather timely reveals how the Environment Agency forced an online information provider to remove flood information from its service which the company had gained from the Environment Agency. It did this as large parts of Yorkshire look more like Bangladesh as climate change wrought terrible rain and flooding on the region."

Free Our Data blog 5 July 2007 Environment Agency gives its reasons for stopping flood data being used "Today's Guardian Technology includes 'Rising tide of frustration at flood maps' restrictions', following on from the Environment Agency (for England and Wales) decision to forbid OnOneMap republishing a scraped version of its flood map data.. which is the sort of data that one would like to have at the moment when considering where to buy or rent next."

The Guardian

Paper and online

5 July 2007 Rising tide of frustration at flood maps' restrictions "With floods in the news, you might think that the government and its agencies would want to encourage people to find out whether properties for sale or rent are at risk of inundation. Yet while parts of South Yorkshire still suffer from June's floods, the Environment Agency has moved to stop an outside site offering its flood mapping data in a more usable form."

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2007/jul/05/guardianweeklytechnologysection.freeourdata

Free Our Data blog 30 June 2007 Environment Agency yanks flood data from OnOneMap site "We've written in the past about OnOneMap, which took the interesting step of taking the mobile phone mast data from Ofcom and making it available on its property/rental search site. But recently it did something much more interesting - and, given the weather, useful. At the start of June it added the Environment Agency's flood risk data to its Google Maps implementation."

"Ononemap.com in the UK offers searchable street maps of neighbourhoods with most of the homes for sale or rent plotted as little red Monopoly-style houses. Click on the icon and you’re directed to more information and estate agent details, which are input automatically for no fee.

Founder Philip Sheldrake ... wants to help both buyers and agents, and many of the latter have asked him to help improve their own sites."

7 Oct 2006 The next big thing - mapvertising

"You plan your car journeys with MapQuest. You nose around property values through map-based websites such as OnOneMap.com. You even track your favourite celebrities’ movements in almost-real time by logging on to user-annotated mash-ups of Google Maps. So why wouldn't the ad industry see you as a lost opportunity?

...The bottom line: expect map-based advertising to form the next online gold rush as businesses from restaurants to lingerie boutiques compete to place logos and product photos along the streets you are navigating through."

4 Sept 2006 Rightmove's lofty position is unassailable - for now

"Philip Sheldrake bought me lunch the other day. I bought his story. The 35-year-old is the founder of Ononemap.com, the latest in a long line of internet property ventures.

Unlike many insipid rivals, this one is fantastic. The website shows most of the homes for sale in your neighbourhood with little red houses on a map. Word of mouth could turn this into an overnight hit.

Many similar websites find it hard to achieve scale because few estate agents would pay to advertise on a start-up. Ononemap, by contrast, puts the homes on its site for free."
